Meet Ruby the Horse! She’s my latest design for my annual Lunar New Year series! This is my 8th year designing Chinese zodiac animals amigurumi patterns, but this year feels extra special because it’s my zodiac animal.
In Chinese culture, if it is your zodiac year, you are supposedly going to experience a more unstable year. And with 2026 being the Year of the Fire Horse, things are even more tumultuous (the Fire Horse is too wild). Doesn’t sound great, but at least I have a few cute Horse plushies to accompany me and a positive attitude!

Chinese Lunar New Year Amigurumi Year of the Horse Crochet Pattern Notes
The difficulty level of this pattern is Intermediate. The snout, hair, arms and ears are all sewn on.
This pattern is written in US crochet terminology. The finished Horse measures to be roughly 13.5 cm (5.25 in) tall.
I used Paintbox Yarns Cotton Aran to make Ruby the Horse. The yarn itself tends to split slightly, but the available colour choices and the stitch definition is great. You can also use any yarn as long as you correspond your hook to the weight of your yarn. For this pattern, I used about 15g of Coffee Bean, 20g of Soft Fudge, 20g of Red Wine, and a little bit of Light Caramel and Mustard Yellow.
Please keep in mind that the exact amount of yarn you use will depend on your personal tension and the type of stitch you use.
You’ll find the 12-page PDF crochet pattern in my shop. The pattern includes a helpful notes and guides section, lots of photos, and links to helpful video tutorials. The pattern also includes information on the yarn/hook sizes my testers used when testing the pattern.
