Meet Miss Understood, the third therapy doll in my Mr. Frond’s Therapy Dolls crochet collection. Miss Understood is most prominently featured in the episode “The Silence of the Louise” (Season 8, Episode 2), where Louise forms an oddly adorable friendship with Millie to solve the case of the attack on Mr. Frond’s therapy dolls.

Gauge
5 Round Circle = 2” with a 3.5mm hook
Gauge isn’t super important for amigurumi, but I included it just in case you want to check your gauge. Being a little off should not affect the final product too much. You can learn more about how to measure gauge for amigurumi here!

Yarn I Used
I used Paintbox Yarns Cotton Aran for this toy; however, you can use any cotton yarn as long as you correspond your hook to the weight of your yarn. For this pattern, I used roughly 35g of Ballet Pink (a little more than half skein of yarn), 30g of Daffodil Yellow (a little more than half skein of yarn), 30g of Grass Green (a little more than half skein of yarn), and 30g of Granite Grey (a little more than half skein of yarn).

Assembly
- Pin the Hair Cap onto the top of the Head. Make sure to position it so that the back of the Hair Cap slants towards the back and the front of the Hair Cap is pinned towards the top of the Head. Sew it down in place, do not cut the tail, you will be using this to sew the hair strands down.

- With a water-based marker, draw a slightly off-center line starting from the front of the Hair Cap, counting 8 “rows” (see photo below) towards the back. This will be our slightly side-parted hairline.
- Thread the tail under the Hair Cap and out from the point where your line starts in the front of the Hair Cap.
- Measure and cut 52 strands of Granite Grey yarn to 11 inches each. Group them into bundles of 4, you should have 13 bundles of hair in total.
- Take a bundle of hair, locate the halfway point of the bundle, and place the halfway point onto the line towards the front of the Hair Cap (See photo 1 on the next page).
- Insert your needle under the next row and pull to tighten (photos 2 & 3).
- Continue adding hair bundles with this method until the line you drew earlier is completely covered, you should have 8 bundles on her head.

- Sew another bundle down immediately behind the hairline and fold the hair strands down towards the back (photo 5), we’ll call this the centre back bundle.
- Thread the tail to one side of the centre back bundle and sew down two more bundles, fold the strands down towards the back (photos 6,7 & 8).
- Thread the tail back to the other side of the centre back bundle and sew down two more bundles. You should have a hairline that is perpendicular to the top bundles.

- Smooth the hair down, arrange it so that it’s a slight side part, and tug on the strands to adjust the length on each side of the head.
- Optional but recommended: Glue the hair down to the Hair Cap to secure. Allow to dry. This prevents the hair from being pulled out and keeps it looking neat.
- Pin the Body to the Head and sew together.
- Pin the Arms to the side of the Body, making sure to leave a 1-row gap between the top of the Arms and the Head. I had a distance of roughly 11 sts between the Arms in the front.
- With a pair of sharp scissors, trim the hair so that it’s about shoulder length.

- With Granite Grey yarn, embroider 8 or 9 lines going from the Hair Cap to the forehead (3 to 4 rows below the Hair Cap) to create bangs. This does not have to be perfect and can be of varying lengths. You can also play around with the spacing between the lines.
- Pin the Eyes onto the face, positioning them about a row or two below the bangs with 6 sts between the eyes. Sew in place.

- Pin out a slight frown and embroider it in with black embroidery thread. My mouth is 10 sts wide.
- Pin out the position of the eyelashes (3 lines beside each eye) and embroider it in with black embroidery thread.
- Embroider a short line across the centre of each eye with black embroidery thread to make the eyes look like buttons that have been sewn down. You can also use 18 or 20 mm black buttons here instead.
