I’ve been really into making small amigurumi projects lately. There’s just something so satisfying about being able to create something so quickly from scratch. This week, I decided to make Gudetama and the bits and bobs that come with him on a plate.
I worked mainly with worsted weight yarn for this project, but had to switch to sport weight yarn for the amigurumi broccoli because I don’t have the specific colours in worsted weight on hand. If you make the broccoli with worsted weight yarn, your broccoli floret will just look slightly bigger.

I also struggled with embroidering the Gudetama face a lot. I think it maybe took me 14 tries? I tried to embroider the mouth onto the face, but that proved to be way too hard for me, so I eventually just gave in and wool felted it onto the face. You can also just cut a piece of white felt in the right size and shape and glue it on.
The difficulty level of this pattern is Easy and this pattern is written in US crochet terminology.

Hi! I’m planning on making this for one of my roommates, but was wondering how I could go about making a jumbo-sized, squishy Gudetama! Do you have any insight/tips?
Hi Simone,
This pattern should translate well enough even if you size up the yarn/hook. However, I haven’t done it so I can’t guarantee that it will work. To make sure your squishy yarn has a better chance of working for this pattern, you will need to test out the yarn you choose with different sized hooks to find one that creates stitches that are tight enough so that the stuffing doesn’t show through. I hope this makes sense.
And because of the stitch height difference, your Gudetama *might* turn out to be a little longer, so you’ll have to adjust the amount of rows there. This video here: https://youtu.be/CN60xxVx4G0 might help you out a bit.
Good luck!
Abby
Hi it’s so cute. I cannot wait to make it thank you so much. I have hobbii 8/8 yarn what hook size do you recommend for this yarn? One size smaller than packaging says?
Hi Diana,
I’m not familiar with hobbii 8/8, so I wont be able to make a suggestion on the hook size. But as a rule of thumb, go one or two hook sizes below the smallest hook size the packaging recommends.
Hope this helps!
Abby
Hi. Tbis is fantastic! Thanks so much for sharing. My daughter is going to love this. Just one question on the legs, I’m confused by the instruction to turn whilst doing a spiral – I’m unsure how to do that. Is it so you turn a tube into a flat 2d section?
Hi Dee,
Yep, when you start to turn, you are no longer working in continuous rounds. So your leg should look like a little tube with a little flap.
Abby
Thanks for your reply! So I sc into the first stitch after the hoop on my hook right? Sorry, I’m pretty new to crochet! #newbie
Hi Dee,
Yep, that’s correct!
